Dear Reader:
Many things are happening. Many things have happened. I don’t have the funding to recollect them all in this written article but I will speak about the main parts. My ninth grade nephew got in my face today.
I walk outside my room with a goal to retrieve a ramen noodle packet. From what I can visually gather immediately as I exit my room, I see the kitchen stove hot. The big side one on the bottom right to me. It's quite big for a small pot. I notice Jadiel in the living space. I come back from a room where I retrieve a ramen noodle packet. As I begin analyzing the stove further, I notice things that can be burned like the wooden handles of other pots near or top of the hot stove that is on. I call Jadiel. He doesn’t respond. I begin clearing the pots, saying “are you stupid?” Still doesn’t respond. The moment I turn off the stove that is on to position the pot to the top right, Jadiel jumps from the couch and comes very close to me. I move him, signaling space. I notice the weight he has on him, and I get mad and push him again with more force. He continues to get in my face. Thankfully my mother is there to break it up and position herself in front of me, using her weight and body to create a protective shield. Jadiel snaps out of his trance and backs away, gives up and goes to his room.
I always wear a black robe, with no clothes underneath so naturally I am in an especially weakened and exposed state in addition to my poor diet due to not being able to find
employment for 3 on-going years.
I communicated this to my sister. Our mother also communicated her concern to her daughter. Our mother and sister relationship’s has been straining these past few weeks over a man she has been seeing; the next door neighbor who was staying in that residence. He impregnated a woman there named Jennifer. They got a divorce and now she is publicly with the 27-28 year old. The man has a history with the Court and trespassing and hunting illegally. He now works as a technician in an apartment complex. My sister is 35. My sister leaves the house every night to spend time with him. This has been straining my resources and quite frankly the resources of the family. Jadiel also spoke back to my mother yesterday, saying “oh my god” in spanish but my mother corrected it to “oh you're learning spanish?” That's where you originate from. Cuban and Dominican. My mother and I are obviously concerned about her new relationship and the cost of it; she hasn’t paid for her car insurance, etc. If he can’t provide that, then it's best she just be alone. My sister and our mother fight about it. When I try to speak to her, she eats me alive. My mother: “When she talks to me, she eats me with potatoes.”
My sister speaks with Jadiel in his room alone, telling me and my mother not everything has to be a big deal. I come after a couple of minutes, opening the door. I see him crying. I said “he got in my face”. Her response “he was defending himself.” My mother comes in after that
and she goes off on my sister. Repeating the disrespect he showed our mother while talking back. Some days ago, a similar experience happened (refer back to the article “My Nephew Bullies Me and Tells me Ugly Things”) where I needed to get the nuggets from the air fryer and Jadiel sitting in front of it. I tell him to move and even say “please.” He wasn’t responding. My mother intervened and said in English “Jadiel he needs to get the food out”. After this, he moves but with attitude and gasps. Jadiel started making some soup, our mother said it was done. Jadiel, upset, said “I just started it” and uses the word “oh my god” but in Spanish. My sister struggles to defend her child as mother makes it impossible, saying “he needs to learn” and he's gonna grow up “being a monster”. My sister, not having an escape, she heads to the backyard where my father is and her boyfriend is and other relatives of my father's side. While I am not able to go outside and confront my relatives in a confident manner, using my spanish speaking skills. My Mother is immune and can go where she pleases.
Father says to stop/cool it. Mother repeats the severity of the situation and how I was about to get in a physical altercation with Jadiel. Mother starts screaming at her. How my sister talks back to my mother reaches a fever pitch and she screams loud at her, in front of everyone. Telling her to teach her kid and she better watch how she speaks to her cause if she doesn’t, “we’ll see how we touch.”
My mother’s yelling awakens the presence of my older brother and he exits his room. However, he doesn’t want to confront everyone back there either. Mother comes back from the backyard. Mother starts repeating what happened. Brother tries to defend Jadiel saying “Josue says shit too.” Mother says, she is thinking about the future and how he will react – who will he become? Once mother and I finish repeating the incident, mother goes to her room. She instructs me to not speak to Jadiel. Father comes from the backyard and I tell him about the incident and replay the scene.
Once me and my brother are alone, I talk frankly about what happened. When I speak to my brother, I tend to code switch to a ghetto language saying “he got in my face like he wanted to show hands.” I tell my brother he needs to learn to respect me. Brother tries to dominate the conversation over me, as he always tries to do by stating I tell him shit. He tells me I don’t contribute anything, I don’t work or anything. He fails to understand what I am teaching him and serves what purpose and instead sees me as a weak man. I tell him, if we start fighting, he is all fat, and to watch himself because my bones are stronger. He gasps “comparing yourself to a 15 year old.” Anyways this conversation goes on for quite some time. I tell him the only shit I’ve told him is the truth. “His mother doesn’t love him.” Brother infers because she feeds him, clothes him, and takes him to school – she does love him. I tell my brother that she leaves every weekend and every afternoon during the week to get “dick”. She doesn’t love him 100%. Brother says “not everything is 100%” and I refute this by saying since it's not 100 percent, I can argue she doesn’t love him.
Updates on my brother… He lost his hotel job some 4-5 months back. He hasn’t had a job since. My brother’s intelligence isn’t great. I tell him, I’m smarter than you. He tells me “no you're not”. I tell him, if I had your body, and looks of a nobody, I’d be applying everywhere. When I apply somewhere, they immediately get jealous because “I went to college”. Anyways, my brother fails to understand the main point of me being Uncle to Jadiel, and Jadiel needing to respect that. My brother doesn’t understand the importance of respect given versus respect earned. He thinks respect is earned. I think respect is given, especially if in someone’s personal space.
Updates on my father… He went to Cuba for a week. So he wasn’t present to witness Jadiel’s retaliation. There also wasn’t food and my mother had to ask the neighbor for $100 dollars borrowed. When father came back late in the day, he knocked on my door. I didn’t respond immediately, so he greeted Jadiel and David. I opened the door. Father and I hug. I asked him about Cuba and how it is. “It’s all destroyed. Not sure how the people live” says father.Standard greetings in Cuba settings. He pulls out his phone and shows me pictures of my family and grandma’s arms which were poked while doctors were trying to find a vein. Once he finished, I said “a big family” and father said “biggest.” He asks about me, have you made any money? About $20 dollars for cents on tasks. Father shrugs. I told him there might be a 20 hour online job but not sure if I passed the exam. I then try to go back to my room, wanting to rest. Noting my back pain being present. He then calls me for me and hands me letters. This goes on for about 3 times of me entering and leaving the room. He told me to just wait at some point, since there were a lot of letters. He asks “you don’t look for the letters?” I told him no but I did see a notice of the court for victor (my other nephew from my sister from my father’s side) for probably a ticket. Father says yeah, he got into trouble.
This was quite possibly the most genuine long form of talk I’ve had with my father for a while. I didn’t engage with him much before.
There was another interaction, the following day on my birthday of course. I exit my room as I hear my father is in the kitchen with bags of food. We greet each other. I tell him “24 years wow” and that you're “doing good things”. He chuckles. I go to my sister’s room to grab a canola bar. I eat it in the living room and walk around. He pulls out his wallet. I walk up. He pulls out $100 dollars and he pulls back teasing me. I thank my father. He tells me about my mother going crazy asking for money, to co-sign on her car to reduce her payments by $200. I say oh, unsure how to respond. Some time has passed and my sister and father talk in the kitchen. Sister says mother doesn’t pay the car payments, she co-signing on her car is what messed me up. Father thinks my mother wants to mess him up too. Sister re-counts an event where she was dropped home during the weekend and came to say hello to her kids and my mother started yelling at her. This wasn’t what happened. My sister banged my brother’s door to
get him to give her keys to her car back. She was in a work out jumpsuit. I tell my mother my sister is in the living room and point to the living room. Mother asks her daughter: have you hugged your kids? Kids then come to her and hug her. She didn’t initiate anything. I come out of my room and furiously defend my mother and tell my sister to watch how she speaks to my mother. Father tries to defend my sister saying you are brother and sister. I tell my father that she leaves every day to visit him and he doesn’t pay her shit. Father says that's between her and her boyfriend. I then repeat the story of how Jadiel was bullying me. He said “every food in this house is shared”. I told him about how he wouldn’t move and how I had to physically move him. My sister tries to defend him and says I call him “retarded.” I then tell father how he tells me ugly things: “I hate you. Nobody wants you here, not even your mother wants you here.” Father says there needs to be talks with Jadiel about that. I finish with saying “this is a house of love. Not all the hate he holds inside.” I then go back inside my room. I notice my sister’s tone is unusually low when around my father’s proximity.
On the 29th of September, it was my father’s birthday. It was a Tuesday, so I haven’t been alerted by my family about his birthday. I didn't hear my brother or if my brother congratulated him, I was probably asleep in the morning. I exit my room, grab two packets of ramen (don’t usually eat two and end up throwing most of it in trash). My father lets me know about leftover salmon (I don’t like fish). He doesn’t alert me about his birthday. Fast forward around 7pm. I go to make some nuggets and my mother tells me about my father’s birthday to have me
congratulate him. I ask if there are other people outside? Mother said she thinks no. I go outside and just I congratulate, I notice he is a bit drunk and hugs me and kisses my right cheek. He asks me who told you? My mother I say. Father gasps and “ughs”. Father gets upset telling me “why do you always forget about me, when I never forget about you with $100 dollars in my hand”. I tell him I didn’t ask for the $100 dollars and what. Father grunts.“I don’t even remember my mother’s birthday” I say. He then switches gears from fighting to “it doesn’t matter, I will always care for you” and that “even in my death I would still try to help you.” I told him that I would do the same. “I don’t have $100 to give you though.” Father understands saying “I know you can’t give me $100” and asserts a toast. I tell him I don’t drink father. Father says a small sip. Father pours for me and him. We click and as I try to swallow the liquor, my body rejects it and I spit it out despite my attempt to accept the substance. Father looks at the sink outside and hands me something to wipe my mouth. He then tells me about the food “Yulka” (spanish). I tell him I’m okay, I’m heating up some nuggets. He tells me to smell it. I say it's good. I tell him okay, I’ll have some. He also hands me some cooked meat and I thank him and go back inside. Mother smiles good, you congratulated him? I said yeah.
Let's backtrack to the morning of today so I can bring this all together. Funny how I said I couldn’t say everything, but I have said almost everything. This morning, my mother told me breakfast was ready. It was eggs with some leftover fish. I didn’t like it. It tasted awful. Father tells me what's up. I told him just woke up. He goes to the fridge and I follow behind him. I tell
him I’m coming down with a cold because of that drink you gave me. Mother stops before going to her room. Sister washing the dishes. Father asserts yeah for my birthday “of course”. I told him that will be the last time I will comply. Father shrugs. Mother supports me by saying “yeah no drinking.”
I’m in my room. Father talks to my sister about the car insurance. Sister annoyingly responds yeah I changed to a lesser plan to $90 dollars versus $200. Father says but why do you answer me in that way?
When my father leaves, I take a different approach to speak to my sister. I asked him what about the car insurance? My sister says “not talking to you.” I then say, why are you even paying for car insurance if you get in an accident, you’ll already be dead. My sister agrees.
